The study, understanding, and popularisation of the historical development and the reciprocal relationships between the different cultures that make up our complex society are today more necessary than ever. These tasks, subject to constant updating from a methodological and practical point of view, are at the centre of the action of major ethnographic museums at an international level. Italy joined in 2016, with the establishment of the MuCiv - Museum of Civilisations. The museum was born from the integration of several important collections previously belonging to independent museums, namely: the “Luigi Pigorini” Museum of Prehistoric Ethnography; the museum of popular arts and traditions “Lamberto Loria”; the “Alessandra Vaccaro” museum of the early Middle Ages; the “Giuseppe Tucci” oriental art museum and the soon to be established “Ilaria Alpi” Italian African Museum (former Colonial Museum). The goal of the thesis project is to formulate a design hypothesis that allows a better function for the collections and spaces that today house the MuCiv.
